O's game in review

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Highlights and lowlights from the Orioles' 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

UP- Doug Linton: Given scant notice that he was starting, Linton hung more zeros on the scoreboard. He'll be in Baltimore someday.

DOWN- Terry Burrows: Manager Ray Miller didn't like the way he was throwing. No kidding.

UP- Gabe Molina: Strikes out two to take Burrows off the hook in the sixth, then tacks on a scoreless seventh.

DOWN- The offense: The bats were quiet, and it took some Dodgers blunders in the field to avoid a loss.

EVEN- Danny Clyburn: Makes an ill-advised, off-line throw from left field in the sixth, but atones with his first spring homer later in inning.

UP- Jesse Garcia: Forget going 0-for-4. He was superb at shortstop. Just what Miller needed to see given the iffy status of Jeff Reboulet.

The bats

Not much noise coming from here, but there were some clutch hits among the five. Clyburn's homer cut into a 2-0 Dodgers lead. In the eighth, Lyle Mouton led off with a walk and stole second as Clyburn struck out. A two-out walk to Chris Hoiles extended the inning, and catcher Julio Vinas got his first hit in five spring at-bats to drive in the tying run. When right fielder Scott Livingstone overran the ball, pinch runner Ricky Otero scored from first. B. J. Surhoff went 2-for-2 and Brady Anderson reached base four times, including a first-inning single.

The arms

Linton began the game by walking Jacob Brumfield, but Warren Newson hit into a double play. Dave Hansen singled with out one in the second and was wiped out by another double play. That was the extent of the damage against Linton, who turned in three strong innings in an emergency start. Burrows struggled, allowing two runs and three hits in 2 1/3 innings. Molina had the Dodgers taking some funny swings in his 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Heathcliff Slocumb got the win with a scoreless eighth, allowing one hit, and Mike Fetters gave up a harmless single leading off the ninth.

The rest

Anderson had two more walks, giving him 11. Mike Murphy, pinch running for Anderson in the seventh, stole second and went to third on an error. Burrows appeared to have Newson picked off in the fourth, but Newson beat Will Clark's throw to second. Playing right field, Mouton threw out Paul LoDuca trying for a double. Hoiles celebrated his 34th birthday. The Orioles have won two straight after losing six of seven. Five of their past six games have been decided by one run.

Quote of the day

"Well, my hitting coach [Terry Crowley] was right. Vinas can hit. That's how stupid I am for not having him out there more." -- Ray Miller.
