North Carolina upsets No. 7 Princeton in OT; Tar Heels erase 9-7 deficit to pull out 10-9 triumph

Dan Collins converted a pass from Justin Bowman with seven seconds left in overtime to propel 15th-ranked North Carolina over No. 7 Princeton, 10-9, yesterday before 2,432 at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The Tigers (0-3) led 9-7 with 3: 51 left in the third period but didn't score over the final 30: 02, and the Tar Heels (5-2) rallied with four straight goals.

North Carolina forced a tie at 9 on a goal by Matt Crofton, assisted by Jeremy Carey, with 3: 43 remaining in regulation.

The Tar Heels led 4-3 after the first period before Josh Sims gave Princeton its first lead of the game (5-4) 1: 58 into the second quarter. Two ties and two lead changes later, Sims and B.J. Prager scored to put the Tigers ahead 9-6 late in the third.

No. 5 Virginia 15, Massachusetts 6: Tucker Radebaugh and Hanley Holcomb each had four goals to lead the Cavaliers (3-1) past the Minutemen (2-2) in Charlottesville, Va.

Radebaugh's third goal pushed Virginia's lead to 9-3 midway through the third quarter before Massachusetts answered with consecutive goals by Russ Kunkel and Jeremy Guski to pull within 9-5.

Radebaugh and Jason Hart then ignited a 5-0 Cavaliers run with goals in the last 17 seconds of the third.

No. 10 Delaware 15, Butler 13: Senior midfielder Jim Bruder scored a career-high five goals as the visiting Blue Hens (4-0) won their seventh straight game dating back to last season and continued their best start since 1976.

Sean Carney added two goals and three assists for Delaware. Chris Vosburgh led the Bulldogs (2-4) with four goals.

Delaware led 12-6 with 6: 18 left in the third quarter before Butler rallied with six straight goals to force a tie at 12 with 11: 01 left to play.

But Bruder put the Blue Hens ahead to stay a minute later.

No. 13 Pennsylvania 7, Yale 2: Peter Janney and Todd Minerley each had two goals and the host Quakers (4-1) are off to their best start since 1985. Penn goalkeeper Matt Schroeder had 15 saves and allowed a season low in goals.

It's the first time since 1992 that the Quakers have opened Ivy League play with a win.
