Retired firefighter dies from injuries caused by explosion

WOODLAWN -- A retired Baltimore County firefighter whose house exploded Thursday night when he mixed chemicals to make fireworks died late Friday of injuries he suffered in the accident.

Patrick W. Monaghan, 50, of the 2000 block of Hillside Drive had suffered second-degree burns over his entire body as a result of the chemical explosion. He was taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where he died.

Because of extensive damage and chemical residue, Monaghan's one-story, single-family home was burned by firefighters as a safety precaution yesterday.

Freeland man killed by truck as he walked in I-83 lane

HEREFORD -- A Baltimore County man was struck and killed Friday night by a tractor-trailer as he walked in the northbound lanes of Interstate 83.

State police attributed the death of Matthew S. Conlin, 34, of the 1200 block of Walker Road in Freeland to pedestrian error. Police said they received several calls about Conlin walking in the middle of the highway.

Joseph Holland, 56, was driving the tractor-trailer north on I-83, just north of Bunker Hill Road, about 10: 15 p.m., when his rig struck Conlin, police said. No charges are expected to be filed against Holland, police said.

In Howard County

Man arrested on weapons, drug charges in traffic stop

State police arrested a 40-year-old New Jersey man early yesterday on drug and weapons charges after troopers found two semiautomatic handguns and 3 pounds of marijuana during a traffic stop in Howard County.

Troopers stopped the man for speeding at 12: 20 a.m. as he traveled south on Interstate 95, north of Route 216. During the stop, troopers found guns, drugs and $800 in cash, police said.

Sinatra Brown of the first block of Melville Lane in Willingboro, N.J., was charged with possession of marijuana, possession with intent to distribute marijuana and illegal possession of handguns. He was being held yesterday in the Howard County Detention Center in lieu of $10,000 bail.

In Baltimore City

Police seek two people in Pennsylvania Ave. killing

Police said they were searching yesterday for two people who shot and killed a Baltimore man Friday night in the 2100 block of Pennsylvania Ave.

Anthony Griffin, 30, of the 4700 block of Garrison Ave. was shot in the chest at 9: 15 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A motive for the shooting was not known, but police said witnesses saw a gray vehicle with tinted windows pull away from the scene.

City's 34 fire fatalities in 1998 lead the state

Baltimore led the state in fire deaths last year, with the city's total accounting for almost half of the 78 people who died in Maryland blazes, according to a report scheduled to be released this week by the State Fire Marshal's Office.

According to the report, 34 people died in Baltimore fires last year. The figure was an increase from 24 people in 1997.

Other counties in the region with fire fatalities last year were: Baltimore County, 13; Anne Arundel County, three; Harford County, two; and Howard County, one.

In Worcester County

Officer sues Ocean City for denial of parental leave

OCEAN CITY -- A police officer is suing the Ocean City Police Department and the town for $200,000 plus interest, saying he was denied time off to care for his wife and his child, who was born in March 1997.

Glen McIntyre's lawsuit, filed March 5 in federal court, alleges he was illegally denied parental leave under the federal Family and Medical Leave Act.
