Clifton M. Janney, 57, Sun employee
Clifton M. Janney, who worked in the composing room of The Baltimore Sun for more than three decades and volunteered at Our Daily Bread, died Wednesday afternoon of a heart attack while at work. The Perry Hall resident was 57.
Mr. Janney began his newspaper career as a messenger for The Evening Sun in 1957. In 1962, he transferred to the composing room where he worked as a floor boy and later as a proof press operator, machinist apprentice, assistant machinist foreman, compositor and general printer.
Born and reared in Highlandtown, Mr. Janney attended Baltimore City College at night and earned his GED in 1962. The former Canton resident enjoyed growing a vegetable garden each summer, doing yard work and making home improvements.
An outdoorsman, he liked hiking in Gunpowder State Park and on the Northern Central Railroad Hiking Trail. A movie buff, Mr. Janney collected science fiction films and Hollywood classics. He was a regular volunteer at Our Daily Bread, a downtown soup kitchen.
He was a communicant of St. Isaac Jogues Roman Catholic Church, 9215 Old Harford Road, where a Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. today
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, the former Carolyn Squires; a son, Michael T. Janney of Laguna Niguel, Calif.; two daughters, Donna M. Janney and Diane M. Janney, both of Baltimore; a brother, Robert Janney of Bel Air; a sister, Margaret Chapman of Baltimore; his parents-in-laws, William and Elaine Squires of Perry Hall; and a grandson, Jordan Janney Mojtabaei of Baltimore.
Blanche H. Burgess, 92, teacher in Howard County
Blanche H. Burgess, a Howard County elementary school teacher for more than 30 years, died Tuesday of heart failure at Good Samaritan Nursing Center. The Ellicott City resident was 92.
Born Blanche Hopkins in Princess Anne on the Eastern Shore, Mrs. Burgess graduated from the then-Salisbury State Teachers College in 1933 and attended the Johns Hopkins University and what is now Towson University.
She taught in Howard County from the 1920s until 1964.
A great fan of music, she was an accomplished pianist.
Graveside services will be held at noon today at Parsons Cemetery, North Division Street, in Salisbury.
James Norman Burgess, her husband of 60 years, died in 1993.
She is survived by a sister, Katherine Thompson of North Wales, Pa., and many nieces and nephews.
Estelle M. Waters, 83, telephone operator
Estelle M. "Tody" Waters, who moved to Jarrettsville in 1985 after living most of her life in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, died Monday from complications of a stroke at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson. She was 83.
A native of New York City, the former Estelle Biesser worked as a Manhattan telephone operator until she married Joseph Waters in 1937. The couple moved to Morristown, N.J. in 1951 and retired to Tobyhanna, Pa. in the 1970s.
Mr. Waters died in 1984 and Mrs. Waters moved to Jarrettsville the next year.
She enjoyed watching golf on television and reading. She also enjoyed the countryside around her Harford County home and was fond of cheering up shut-ins with chats by telephone.
Services were held Thursday.
Mrs. Waters is survived by a daughter, Margaret W. Patten of Jarrettsville; and a son, Michael J. Waters of San Antonio, Texas.
