O's game in review

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Highlights and lowlights from the Orioles' 6-0 victory over the Montreal Expos last night in Jupiter, Fla.

UP - Sidney Ponson: Jupiter is much kinder the third time around.

UP - Will Clark: Doubles, singles and walks in three trips, and gets his fourth RBI. Average is up to .474. So, Raffy, how's the knee?

UP - Brady Anderson: Runs down two long drives in center and collects the Orioles' first triple of spring.

DOWN - Mike Bordick: Goes 0-for-4 and fails to drive in Anderson from third with none out.

UP - B. J. Surhoff: Two doubles account for his first extra-base hits of spring. Also knocks in a run.

UP - Lenny Webster: Produces one run with groundout and another with a double into the left-field corner.

The bats

They were smoking in the sixth. Leading 1-0, the Orioles sent nine batters to the plate and scored five times. They had three extra-base hits, including Anderson's leadoff triple. Clark and Surhoff each finished with two hits. Tommy Davis got his first hit this spring, a leadoff double in the eighth. Jerry Hairston had an RBI groundout.

The arms

Ponson had served up four homers in his two previous starts here, but the Expos didn't come close to taking him deep last night. He allowed four hits in four scoreless innings, including singles by Fernando Seguignol and Shane Andrews to open the second. The ball didn't leave the infield the rest of the inning. The only extra-base hit off him was a one-out double by Orlando Merced in the first. Again, the ball stayed in the infield for the last two outs. Doug Johns had two shutout innings and hasn't allowed a run in seven. David Evans, Jesse Orosco and Mike Timlin finished up. Timlin struck out the side in the ninth in his most effective outing.

The rest

Cal Ripken made a diving catch along the line to rob Orlando Cabrera with runners on first and second in the second inning. Before last night, five of the Orioles' last six games -- including four in a row -- had been decided by one run. Also before last night, Orioles' starters had compiled a 2.74 ERA (14 runs in 46 innings) in 13 games. Ponson took a little more air out of those numbers. The Orioles return home today to play the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Quote of the day

"I was glad to see Ponson step it up tonight. He looked like he was a little more serious about things." -- Ray Miller.
