Mel Govig, 64, co-founder of Maryland Kite Society
Mel Govig, a co-founder of the Maryland Kite Society, died March 10 of heart failure at Northwest Hospital Center. The Randallstown resident was 64.
Mr. Govig became interested in kites in 1961 when he visited the Carmel Kite Festival in California. He built a variety of kites -- from an 8-foot "Crashing Boar" to box kites and Indian or Korean-style fighters. One of his kites was commercially manufactured by the Cloud Seekers company.
In 1977, his wife, also a kite enthusiast, purchased Kite Tales magazine and renamed it Kite Lines. He was a contributor.
The Govigs co-founded the Maryland Kite Society in 1969.
Born in Rochelle, Ill., Mr. Govig was raised in Salem and Portland, Ore. He graduated from the University of Oregon in 1956 and joined the Navy the next year.
After leaving the Navy in 1964, he moved to Baltimore, where he held positions in systems management at Johns Hopkins Hospital, the University of Maryland Medical School and Westinghouse Defense Electronics Division. He retired in 1993.
A memorial service will be held at 7: 30 p.m. Friday at Loring-Byers Funeral Home, 8728 Liberty Road, Randallstown.
In addition to his wife, Valerie Cowls, whom he married in 1954, he is survived by two daughters, Dana Derry of Baltimore and Kari Cress of Millers; his parents, Melvin F. and Mary Govig of Corona, Calif.; and five grandchildren.
Anna C. L. Greenstreet, 86, homemaker
Anna Carryl Lee Greenstreet, a homemaker, died Monday of heart failure at her home in Columbia. She was 86.
Born in Baltimore, the former Anna Carryl Lee Thumm moved to Catonsville as a youngster and graduated from Catonsville High School in 1930.
In 1933, she married Edward Greenstreet, who died in 1984.
Services are set for 1 p.m. tomorrow at Rolling Hills Baptist Church, 11510 Johns Hopkins Road, Clarksville.
She is survived by three daughters, Carryl Peters of Culpeper, Va., Dorothy Barkley of Columbia, and Nancy Crittenden of Fairfax, Va.; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
