North Carroll's students show Greek, Egyptian art

THE BALTIMORE SUN

YOU WON'T WANT TO miss the Youth Art Month exhibit by public and home-schooled students on exhibit through Sunday at Carrolltown mall in Eldersburg. Every school in Carroll County is represented.

North Carroll High School students have a strong exhibit featuring their study of Egyptian and Greek art.

The Egyptian cartouche, a series of hieroglyphics used to depict one's name, was the basis for key chains painted by Rachel Brown, Candice Simpson, Jessie Rhoten, Brandon Hirsch, Carissa Tierney, Pam Carr, Amanda Miller, Ryan Koch, Casey Buchman, Billy Maynard, Aaron Sahl, Kevin Martin, Chris Graham, Ashly Fox, Lisa Murphy, Becca Myers and Pam Click.

Larger paper mosaic cartouches were done by Mark Laird, Justin Tipton, Donny Miller, Josh Miller, Tarynn Barker and Shannon Wertz.

Several students exhibit both styles of Egyptian-inspired art. They include Jenn Macknew, Chad Miller, Kristy Shaffer, Amanda Perry, Dawn Engel, Jeff Graham, and Alexis Kibler.

Students drew sports scenes in black crayon and filled the background in red on paper as part of an illustration of a Greek vase. Involved in this work were Megan Thomas, Angie Owen, Erin Alexander, Brandon Setzer, Casey Corder, Ashley Usko, Morgan Routson, Jen McCourt, David Doarnberger, Tara Lowder, Tracie Mitchell, Angela Simmons, Dennis Roth, Kyle Lettau and Danny Beasley.

Simulated primitive cave painting is displayed by Casey Corder, Brian Stephens, Chris Adkin and Dwayne Ligtsey.

Students also developed drawing and painting technique in various media. Showing conte, a hard chalk media, are Andy Haines, Valerie Mancuso, and Matt Clark. Charcoal drawing is by Erin Barnes, Nereida David, Jamie Havilasek, Trey Shamer III and Ted Bedmer.

Pencil drawing is shown by Matthew Jacobson, Meredith Niles, Kate Grey and Brandy Malachowski. Cut paper and tempera collage is shown by Melissa Tierney, Keefe Manwaring, Renee Snyder, Stephanie Newman, Brandi Paquette, Brad Calp, Kevin Miller, Amanda Neisslein, Amy Leister and Dan McNally.

Kate Stonesifer shows an acrylic painting, and tempera paintings are shown by John Franklin, Catlin O'Meara, Donnie Kincade, and Jessie Heiliger. Pen and ink drawing is shown by Jennifer Crumbaugh, Sarah Mohlmann, Will Abbott and Jenilyn Anderman.

Watercolor paintings are shown by Chris Blake and Erin Barnes. Scratchboard, in which black ink is scratched away to reveal a white or colored line, is exhibited by Katie Stant, Nereida David and Ted Bedmer.

Victorian tea party

The Snydersburg Homemakers Club, a women's social club celebrating its 65th year, enjoys a good cup of tea. Recently, members gathered for a Victorian tea party that featured a member's collection of teapots manufactured by McCormick and Halls.

"We dressed up with old-fashioned hats and attire, and decorated with tablecloths and flowers," said Ruth Cassell.

Last year's theme was a Victorian parlor. This year, the club chose a fantasy theme, "Tea with Dolly and Me," and members brought dolls to the party.

Club member Dawn Graf shared her collection of teapots, which were used to serve the tea. Members made scones and clabbered cream for a complete "high tea."

"It makes us feel special to have friends with tea," Cassell said.

About 35 members took part.
