Senior midfielder Justin McCarthy had three goals and two assists to lead top-ranked Washington College to an 11-8 win yesterday over No. 3 Nazareth at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y.
The game was a rematch of last season's Division III national championship, won by the Shoremen, 16-10. Nazareth beat Washington College in both the 1996 and 1997 title games.
The Golden Flyers (0-1) led 2-1 early before the Shoremen (3-0) took control with four consecutive goals and led 7-5 at halftime.
After Nazareth got within a goal twice in the third period, Chris Bieberbach and McCarthy both converted to push Washington College's lead to 10-7.
No. 11 Navy 12, Penn 8: The Midshipmen (2-1) used goals from nine players and overcame a two-goal deficit at halftime to win.
Adam Borcz, Jon Brianas and Jamie O'Leary each had two goals for Navy, which trailed 7-5 at intermission.
Navy forced a tie at 7 on goals by Mike Sheedy and Brianas before back-to-back goals by Borcz put the Midshipmen ahead to stay, 9-7, late in the third quarter.
Penn (2-1) outshot Navy, 31-20, but Midshipmen goalkeeper Mickey Jarboe had 19 saves.
Goucher 16, Dickinson 11: Jed Cestaro had six goals and an assist as the Gophers (2-2) won a nonconference game in Carlisle, Pa. Phil Anthony added four goals for Goucher.
Marymount 10, Western Maryland 9: Jay Grupinski's goal 2: 06 into the third period broke a 7-7 tie and put the Saints ahead for good in a win over the host Green Terror (1-1).
Marymount (1-2) rallied from a 6-1 deficit after one quarter, getting 16 saves from Matt Murray and three goals from Pat McGee.
Rob Witte (South Carroll) had four goals for Western Maryland.
Women
No. 1 Maryland 18, No. 17 Syracuse 8: Jen Adams' career-high five goals, all in the second half, and three assists led the Terps (4-0) to victory. Allison Comito and Tori Wellington each chipped in three goals for Maryland, which led 8-2 at halftime.
The Orangemen (0-2) got as close as 8-5 in the second half after free-position goals by Carrie Soults and Katrina Hable.
Salisbury State 17, Goucher 6: Amanda Moculski and Jen Mezzadra combined for 13 points as the Sea Gulls (2-0, 1-0) blitzed the host Gophers (1-1, 1-1) in a Capital Athletic Conference game. Moculski had five goals and three assists, while Mezzadra added three goals and two assists.
Frostburg State 9, Villa Julie 2: Laura Hemmings had five goals as the host Bobcats won their season-opener. The Mustangs scored twice in the final 45 seconds to avoid the shutout.
