The best medicine
Nothing cures an upset stomach like a good win. Jim Calhoun, who missed Thursday's win with an intestinal virus, recorded his 300th victory at Connecticut in grand style yesterday as his top-seeded Huskies routed New Mexico, 78-56. "I certainly feel better than I did a couple of days ago for two reasons," Calhoun said. "More importantly, we played a solid game."
Upset of the day
Matt Santangelo's 22 points carried 10th seed Gonzaga to an 82-74 win over second seed Stanford, a 1998 Final Four team. The Bulldogs trailed only once in the game, 1-0.
Slow starts
New Mexico's first 13 possessions produced seven missed shots and seven turnovers. Detroit did not score in the first 10 minutes, missing its first 13 shots.
Moving on and home
St. John's made it into the round of 16 for the first time since 1991. This is the second time Maryland has bounced Creighton from the tournament. In 1975, the Terps won, 83-79, with current assistant Billy Hahn a reserve guard.
Blowout city
Two nights after scoring a school tournament record of 108 points, Indiana lost by 25 to St. John's. The Hoosiers' previous biggest margin of defeat in the tournament was 18.
SEC goes to 8-1
Arkansas' loss is the only one for the Southeastern Conference; meanwhile, Stanford's defeat knocked the Pacific-10 from the tournament. Records for selected conferences (number of teams in parentheses):
