THE INFORMATION will be taught in different ways, but the message will be the same -- Don't use tobacco. Area schools are observing Tobacco-Free Kids (TFK) Week as part of the "Learn to Live" cancer prevention program of the Anne Arundel County Department of Health.
The campaign, in its fourth year, runs from tomorrow to March 21. Activities from painting murals to playing games will be used as tools to communicate the consequences of tobacco on health.
Linthicum and North Glen Elementary Schools are sponsoring a poster contest for grades 2 to 4, and a "Kick Butts" slogan contest for grades 5 and 6. At Overlook Elementary School, pupils will take part in an Internet anti-tobacco activity, hold a poster contest, play a tobacco trivia game, make airplanes with anti-smoking slogans, do tobacco crossword puzzles, and take a no-smoking pledge.
Sixth-graders at Hilltop Elementary School are having a poster contest, and students at Lindale/Brooklyn Park Middle Schools will hear daily announcements about tobacco on the public address system.
Pupils will sign a "pledge wall," hold a poster contest, and hear smoking facts over the PA system at George Cromwell Elementary School.
Ferndale Elementary School pupils will be asked to sign a pledge wall promising not to smoke, participate in a poster contest and hear tobacco facts over the PA system. Brooklyn Park Elementary School pupils will compete for prizes making posters, and children at Belle Grove Elementary School will hear a speaker discuss the dangers of using tobacco. Belle Grove pupils also will sign a pledge not to start smoking.
North County High School students will put the names of loved ones who have died or been ill because of tobacco on bracelets. They will be sent to the American Lung Association of Maryland, where they will be linked with others from around the state. The chain will be displayed at an American Lung Association rally Friday at War Memorial Plaza in Baltimore.
'New Orleans' music
The Performing Arts Association of Linthicum will present "The Chesapeake Music Hall" at 8 p.m. Saturday at North County High School.
Tickets are sold on a subscription basis for $23. The final concert of the season will be "The Sounds of New Orleans" at 3 p.m. May 2.

Choralaires in concert
The community is invited to hear the Choralaires in concert at 3 p.m. March 21 at Linthicum Heights United Methodist Church, 200 School Lane.
Basil Duncan who sings with the church choir and is a member of the Choralaires, said the group is new to this area but well known in Baltimore County, where it performs mostly at nursing homes. Lorraine Willis has been the director for 24 years.

St. Patrick's dinner
The Ferndale United Methodist Men will hold its St. Patrick's Day dinner at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church, 117 Ferndale Road. The dinner will include corned beef, ham, cabbage, potatoes, carrots, beverage, and dessert. The cost is $5.75 for adults and $2.75 for children. Carry-out will be available. All in the community are invited to attend the dinner.

Blood pressure lecture
The Heart to Heart Cardiac Support Group is having its next meeting at 7 p.m., Tuesday in Room 116 of Linthicum Heights United Methodist Church, 200 School Lane. "Controlling Your Blood Pressure with Less Medication" will be presented by Michael Glasgow, assistant professor of biology at Anne Arundel Community College. Historical Society dinner
The Ann Arundel County Historical Society is having a dinner March 26 at Snyder's Willow Grove Restaurant in Linthicum. The dinner is open to members of the society and their friends. Willard Mumford, an authority on coins, picker checks and agricultural practices in Anne Arundel County, will speak.
The social hour will begin at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 7 p.m. Entree choices are filet mignon or crab cakes. Cost of the dinner is $30 a person. Reservations can be made until Friday.

Craft show
St. Philip Neri Roman Catholic Church will host its Spring Craft Show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on three floors of the school, 6401 South Orchard Road. Items for sale range from Easter candy and homemade jellies and honey to stained-glass items, jewelry and flower arrangements.

District 32 Democratic Club
District 32 Democratic Club is holding a meeting Thursday at Ferndale Senior Center. A corned beef and cabbage dinner will be served at 7 p.m. for $4. The meeting will begin at 8 p.m. The speaker will be former state Sen. Alfred J. Lipin, who will present a history of the Democratic Club.
Guests are welcome. Dues are $10 a year for members. The club meets on the third Thursday of each month.

Scouting out fun
On a camping trip this month, Boy Scout Troop 550 took to the Rodney Scout Reservation near North East. The Scouts were joined by Troop 216 from Pasadena and Troop 354 from Dundalk. The boys took turns cooking for each other and helped each other learn Scouting skills. They also completed requirements for the Disabilities Awareness Merit Badge.
Dan Senter was senior patrol leader and led the troop for the weekend. Other Scouts on the trip were: John Henkel, Chris LaWall, Jason Carter, Travis Elseroad, Devin O'Brien, Sam Branham, Billy McKercher and Ron Schweiger. The adults were Scoutmaster Butch LaWall, Assistant Scoutmasters August Severn and John McCarty, and Committee members George Kline and Diane Carter.

Water, sewerage upgrades
The Olde Brooklyn Park Improvement Association is having its monthly meeting at 7 p.m., Tuesday at the Brooklyn Park Elementary School, Morgan Road and 14th Avenue.
Jim Hurley, of the county Department of Public Works/Utilities, will present information on the water and sewerage upgrades and the change-over from city water service to the county system.
