Perfect 10's
Since being swept by the No. 7 seeds in the 1993 tournament, the 10th-seeded teams are now 12-10 -- 5-1 in the last six meetings -- against seventh-seeded teams after yesterday's wins by Gonzaga and Creighton.
Dialing long distance
Fifth-seeded Iowa hit 10 of its first 12 three-pointers and finished with a school-record 12 for an NCAA game in its 77-64 victory over Alabama-Birmingham. Guard Adrian Peterson matched his career high with five three-pointers in Oklahoma State's 69-61 victory over Syracuse. Arkansas scored 47.9 percent of its points (45 of 94) from three-point range in routing Siena.
Poor imitation
Samford had called itself "Southern Fried Princeton" for its deliberate style of play, but it was the Bulldogs who got roasted in their NCAA tournament debut. Samford fell behind St. John's 13-0, shot 12-for-48 for the game, was out-rebounded, 45-23, and got pounded by the Red Storm, 69-43.
Moving up
With Oklahoma State's victory over Syracuse, Cowboys coach Eddie Sutton tied the Orangemen's Jim Boeheim for 10th place on the NCAA's career list for tournament victories with 29.
Shooting blanks
Senior Quincy Lewis, Minnesota's leading scorer at 24.4 points, ended his career with a dismal 3-for-19 shooting from the field. Winthrop's first NCAA appearance was not a memorable one. The Eagles shot 25.5 percent from the field (14-for-55) and 43.8 percent from the line (7-for-16) in their loss to Auburn.
Unbeaten in openers
Iowa coach Tom Davis, in his last year of coaching the Hawkeyes, is now 11-0 in NCAA first-round games.
SEC rules again
The Southeastern Conference, which has produced seven Final Four teams and three national champions in the last five years, is off to a 3-0 start with victories by Auburn, Arkansas and Florida.
Quotable
"We scored 39 in the second half, and they scored 39. If that big run doesn't take place in the first half, who knows what would have happened."
-- Texas-San Antonio coach Tim Carter, after his team lost, 91-66, to Connecticut.
