History Day contest for 200 students set Sunday at UMBC
CATONSVILLE -- More than 200 middle and high school students will compete in the Central Maryland History Day on Sundayat the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
The students -- who will come from public and private schools in Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Cecil, Howard, Montgomery and Prince George's counties -- will present projects on the national theme of "Science, Technology and the Invention of History." Topics include military technology, advances in medicine and the history of computers.
Winners will advance to Maryland History Day 1999, the state competition to be held next month at the University of Baltimore.
Driver of car injured in collision with school bus
CUB HILL -- A car veered across a center line on Cromwell Bridge Road yesterday morning, colliding with an empty Harford County school bus and injuring the driver of the car, police said.
Deanna Hall of the 3100 block of Winchester Way was stable in serious condition at Maryland Shock Trauma Center yesterday after her 1997 Nissan Maxima crashed into the school bus about 10: 40 a.m., said Cpl. Vickie Warehime of the Baltimore County Police Department.
No students were on the bus, Warehime said, and the driver was not injured.
Senior Job Expo to be held at Eastpoint Mall atrium
EASTPOINT -- More than 40 employers will be represented at a Senior Job Expo on Tuesday at the Eastpoint Mall atrium, 7800 Eastern Ave.
Sponsored by the county Department of Aging and the Eastern Baltimore Area Chamber of Commerce, the expo will cater to the needs of people age 50 and older.

City 'Speak Up! Speak Out!' contest locations changed
The locations for tonight's and tomorrow's "Speak Up! Speak Out!" trials -- a regional declamation contest -- have been changed.
The southern district elimination trials will be held at 6: 30 p.m. today at Mary E. Rodman Recreation Center, 3600 W. Mulberry St. The final citywide competition will be held at 6: 30 p.m. tomorrow at Mount Royal Recreation Center, 120 W. Mosher St.

Volunteers needed to help with ex-library's renovation
Volunteers are needed to strip paint from 1896 oak woodwork at the Village Learning Place in Charles Village, 2521 St. Paul St., as renovation begins on the former Enoch Pratt Free Library Branch No. 6.
Work hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Volunteers may register by calling 410- 235-8400.
