Game in review

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Highlights and lowlights from the Orioles' 3-3 tie with the Boston Red Sox in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

UP- Charles Johnson: Hits his first homer of the spring, an opposite-field blast in the fifth that produced the game's first run.

UP- Terry Burrows: Dusted himself off after the Fort Myers shelling and was perfect.

EVEN- Chris Hoiles: Drove in a run but also dropped a low throw at first base on a potential double-play that would have prevented Boston's three-run fifth, and left the winning run at third base in the ninth.

UP- Will Clark: A cut-up in the clubhouse, he had more reason to crow after a single and walk in two appearances.

DOWN- Albert Belle: Went 0-for-2, including a called third strike, and had ball glance off his glove near the fence in right that was ruled a double.

UP- Mike Fetters: Struck out the side in the eighth.

The arms

Scott Kamieniecki berated himself for not being sharp, but the Red Sox couldn't score off him in two innings. Heathcliff Slocumb also had two shutout innings, though he allowed two hits and walked two. Burrows retired all three batters he faced, but Ricky Bones surrendered three runs and four hits in two innings. He was hurt by Hoiles' inability to come up with a low throw from shortstop Esteban Beltre in the fifth. Fetters and Arthur Rhodes (two innings, two hits, two strikeouts) preserved the tie.

The bats

Still not a lot of hits. They had six yesterday, one short of their exhibition high. Johnson went deep in the fifth. Brady Anderson singled, walked twice, stole a base and scored a run. Willis Otanez doubled in two trips, continuing his push to make the club. Clark, Cal Ripken and Mike Bordick singled.

The rest

Anderson played the first nine innings in center field before Rich Amaral replaced him in the 10th. The Orioles' third run scored on a wild pitch by Jack Cressend. Beltre was robbed of an RBI hit by a diving stop and throw along the third-base line from Wilton Veras. Rhodes picked off Steve Lomasney in the 10th inning.

Quote of the day

"At least one of us is." -- Kamieniecki, to reporters who waited by his locker and claimed to be in midseason form.
