400-pupil addition opens at Franklin Middle School
REISTERSTOWN -- Educators, parents, community leaders and county and state politicians joined yesterday to open a 400-pupil addition at Franklin Middle School.
The 39,300-square-foot addition will serve as an annex for sixth-graders. It includes 17 classrooms, three science labs, an activity room, music lab, computer lab, art room with a kiln and three "team" rooms for parent conferences. It also has a satellite dining room for 150 students.
Before the addition was completed, the 1,200-pupil middle school was about 200 pupils over capacity. It is expected to gain 200 pupils from Deer Park Middle Magnet School next fall under a boundary line change approved in June.
Children's heritage day set Sunday at Ballestone Manor
ESSEX -- The Baltimore County Historical Trust and the Balle- stone Preservation Society will hold a children's heritage day from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Balle- stone Manor.
In addition to crafts and games, visitors can hear about family life in mid-19th-century properties such as Ballestone and listen to songs and stories from the era. The Ballestone mansion is off Back River Neck Road, near Rocky Point Golf Course.
Families are encouraged to register by calling the trust, 410-832-1812. Cost of the program is $2 a person.
Library holds photo contest for high school students
TOWSON -- Baltimore County Public Library is sponsoring a photography contest for county high school students in honor of National Library Week, which runs from April 11-17.
Photographs may be black and white or color, but they must be photos taken since Jan. 1, 1998. Contestants will compete for $1,500 worth of prizes, and are limited to two entries. Entries must be mailed by March 22.

Greek independence parade to be held in Highlandtown
Baltimore's "Greek Independence Day Parade," a celebration of the city's diversity that honors Greece's 19th-century struggle for freedom against the Ottoman Turks, will be held at 2 p.m. March 28 along Eastern Avenue in Highlandtown.
The parade, which also coincides with the Greek Orthodox Feast of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, will begin at Haven Street and Eastern Avenue and proceed east along Eastern to the Greektown section of Highlandtown. It will end at St. Nicholas Church on Ponca Street.

Man charged in death of his live-in girlfriend
A 37-year-old man was arrested and charged in the weekend fatal beating of his girlfriend, police said.
The body of Sharon Osietski, 39, was found Saturday morning at her home in the 3800 block of Foster Ave. in Southeast Baltimore, police said.
Frederick Fisher, who lived with Osietski, was arrested at the scene Saturday and charged Sunday with first-degree murder, police said. Police said Fisher and Osietski had argued about money before she was killed.
Mercy High School group to present 'The Crucible'
"The Crucible" by playwright Arthur Miller will be presented by the Mercy High School Footlighters at 7: 30 p.m. March 19 and 20 and 2 p.m. March 21.
Tickets are $5 in advance and $6 at the door. On March 21, a pre-show brunch for $12, including the cost of the performance, will be available.
