ROSS SIMONS, director of the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) near Edgewater, will unveil a traveling environmental education exhibit at a reception this evening at the Lowe House Office Building in Annapolis.
"Tales of the Blue Crab" is SERC's first major traveling exhibit and will be made available to grammar schools throughout Maryland.
The exhibit illustrates the life cycle of the state's famous crustaceans, showing where they live, how they grow, and other interesting things about the blue crab and how scientists learn about them. It was produced by Mark Haddon, SERC's director of education, and the assistant director, Dr. Anson Hines.
Money for the exhibit was supplied by the Mills Corp. and a grant from the Smithsonian Outreach Fund.
Peter McMillan, president of Mills Corp., will be on hand at the reception for the unveiling. Other guests will include Democratic state Sen. John C. Astle of District 30 and Barbara D.Samorajczyk, Annapolis' representative on the County Council.
SERC's inaugural lecture in its 1999 lecture series is scheduled for March 17 at the Philip D. Reed Education Center. It will be preceded by a reception at Beller Hall. The center and hall are at the Smithsonian center on the Rhode River.
Dr. Brett Kent, of the University of Maryland, will discuss "Biological Communities of Chesapeake Bay Evident in the Fossil Record," beginning at 7 p.m.
Another reception will follow the lecture.
Other lectures are scheduled once a month through November.

Finding historic sites
Donna Ware, historic sites planner for Anne Arundel County, and Sherri Marsh, historic surveyor for the county, will conduct a series of lectures on "Keeping our History" at the Captain Salem Avery House Museum in Shady Side.
In the first lecture, at 7 p.m. March 25, they'll discuss the types of properties that qualify for the Maryland State Historic Sites inventory and provide and overview of the application process.
If you own a home or building that's at least 100 years old and your property is associated with a historical event, has distinctive design or physical characteristics, or has the potential to provide important information about history, you might want to have it included in the inventory.
Ware urges owners of older properties to participate in this workshop to help her identify and list as many sites as possible.
