Glenelg used strong performances from Lauren Martin and Kris Brust to defeat Frederick County's Brunswick, 68-46, in the Class 1A, South Region finals last night.
Martin had 26 points -- including four three-pointers -- 10 rebounds, nine steals, and seven assists. Brust added 21 points and 12 rebounds for the host Gladiators.
Eighth-ranked Glenelg (24-1) took advantage of a fatigued Brunswick team -- which defeated Oakland Mills 60-55 Friday night -- by using a full-court press the entire game. That seemed to wear down Brunswick, especially in the fourth quarter.
Jamie Cable led Brunswick with a game-high 27 points, including 18 of Brunswick's 23 second-half points.
Class 1A North
Hereford 41, Pikesville 36: Junior forward Tara Clarke scored 17 to lead the Bulls (20-7) to their third victory of the season over the Panthers and earn their first state semifinal appearance since 1982.
Pikesville trailed by 38-36 with 54 seconds left after a layup by Lauren Misler. Clarke then hit a free throw for Hereford, extending the lead to 39-36 with 22.3 seconds remaining.
The Bulls sealed the victory after forcing a turnover that led to a basket by Clarke with 15 seconds left.
Class 4A East
No. 7 Meade 84, Chesapeake 31: The Mustangs (22-4) routed the Cougars for a third time this season to win the region title in Lake Shore under fifth-year head coach Phil Popielski.
Seniors Angie Creek and Katie Netherton capped off spectacular individual region tournaments as the Mustangs dominated from start to finish, shooting 51 percent from the field and out-rebounding the Cougars, 52-23.
Class 2A
Parkside 75, No. 14 Dunbar 68: The host Wicomico County squad took advantage of the Poets' sloppy play in the second quarter to forge a 10-point lead en route to East Region final victory.
Dunbar committed six turnovers in a stretch of eight possessions in the second quarter and never recovered.
The Poets (20-4) made one last run in the fourth quarter, pulling to within three points at 66-63 on a coast-to-coast layup by Tiffany Jones (20 points), but Parkside staved off the comeback with a layup and three free throws to go back up by eight with just over 30 seconds remaining.
North East 61, Towson 38: Senior forward Katie Davis had 27 points, 18 rebounds and six blocks to lead the visiting Indians of Cecil County over the defending state champion Generals in the North Region final.
North East (22-4) will make its first trip to the state semifinals since 1979.
Davis helped North East in a 17-1 mid-game run that opened a comfortable lead.
