Fraternity chapter offers scholarship, award program
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. of Columbia offers a scholarship and awards program for Howard County residents or students who attend school in the county.
The men of Kappa Phi Lambda Chapter -- the national fraternity's Columbia chapter -- will offer nine scholarships to high school seniors of African-American or African descent recognizing academic excellence and potential.
The fraternity also bestows eight nonmonetary awards named after the fraternity's founders -- six for black students noting academic excellence, achievement in sports or service to their school or community.
An award is also offered to a faculty member, counselor or administrator who has inspired African-American students, and another to a parent who has demonstrated commitment and concern for students.
The deadline is April 30. Guidelines and applications are available in school guidance offices, or from Black Student Achievement Program coordinators.
