WITH LITTLE fanfare, 17 teen-agers from Northeast High School's Maryland's Tomorrow program traveled to Mariner Health of North Arundel Tuesday to bring a taste of the Dr. Seuss birthday celebration to the nursing home residents.
While most events in the national Read Across America program involved adults reading to kids, the Northeast group chose to have the kids reading to adults. And the seniors loved it.
"Some of our residents have failing eyesight due to medical conditions," said Sandy Osborne, activity director at Mariner, in Glen Burnie. "They were readers in the past, and miss it."
Crystal Pangle, one of the students, told the story of Theodor Geisel, the author better known as Dr. Seuss, and the teen-agers broke into small groups to take turns reading Dr. Seuss' and other stories to the residents.
But the reading didn't stop there. Some of the residents brought out letters, cards and postcards, to get the kids to read more to them, Osborne said.
"The students were fantastic," she said. "We would be happy to have them visit with us again."
Other students participating were Rusty Poarch, Blair Thomas, Josh Truelove, Stephanie Ginevan, Michael Ginevan, Jason Bierner, Charles Stup, Robin Durnal, Amanda Jenkins, Gregory Florentino, Amanda Dorr, Melissa Swain, Jen Soth, Shannon Showalter, Chrystal Isaacs and Lisa Blueford.
Teacher Sue Smith and aide Carlene Heilman accompanied the group.

The Pasadena Sportfishing Group will be fishing for food for the Anne Arundel County Food Bank at this month's meeting starting at 7: 30 p.m. Monday at the Orchard Beach fire hall on Solley Road.
Dave Nolan, PSG spokesman, said that last year members donated more than 1,800 pounds of food and $300 in cash.
"Each year, we ask members to bring in a bag of nonperishable food or make a cash donation for our Snag-A-Bag event, and they always come through," he said.
Donors will get a chance to win a rod and reel, donated by JR Tackle, at the meeting.
Fishing captain Mike Murphy, who specializes in light tackle fishing in the Honga River and mid-bay area, will be the guest speaker. He will demonstrate the tackle and lure he uses to catch speckled trout.
PSG meetings are open to anglers of all ages. No smoking is permitted in the hall. No membership fees are charged.
