Books with local flavor wanted for minilibrary

THE BALTIMORE SUN

THE MOUNT AIRY Museum is making plans to start a minilibrary as part of its collection this spring.

Virginia Norwood, retired media specialist at Mount Airy Middle School, has agreed to take charge of the acquisition and cataloging of books for the museum.

Several books are already in the museum's possession and include "A Vision of Home," a hardbound book that encompasses 100 years of Mount Airy history, which was compiled for the Centennial Celebration; "The Mt. Airy and B & O Story," written by Herman S. Beck Jr.; "Through the Years: Celebrating 30 Years of Education at Mt. Airy Middle School," a softcover booklet written and compiled by Norwood for the school's 30th anniversary; and "The Ticklish Tooth Book: the Ultimate Collection of Dental Humor," written and compiled by Dr. Gregg Mason, a Mount Airy resident.

The museum hopes to enlarge its collection this spring. It is looking for any books that have information about the town, books that have been written by residents of Mount Airy (fiction and nonfiction), old yearbooks from any of the schools (elementary, middle and high), and books that have been put out by local organizations, especially cookbooks.

Another type of book the museum would like to have is old telephone books of the area and softcover booklets that were written to celebrate anniversaries of local groups.

If you have any books that contain Mount Airy history or if you are a collector of old yearbooks and telephone books, the donation of these materials would be greatly appreciated by museum workers who are trying to gather data.

Also, if you are a local author or if your organization has published any type of book, donations of copies would be welcomed by the museum staff.

The museum will be open on Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons this month and for the Spring Fling in May. Donated copies will be accepted at the museum or the Town Hall.

The Mount Airy Players will present two one-act contemporary comedies written by David Ives and directed by Ken Berry.

"The Philadelphian" presents a young man in a restaurant who has fallen into a "Twilight Zone"-like state in which he can only get what he wants by asking for the opposite.

Shows are at 8 p.m. today and tomorrow at the Celtic Club, 611 N. Market St., Frederick. Admission is $6.

Both plays are intended for mature audiences and contain adult content and language.
