Northern-Calvert (23-2) got 18 points from Jen Mitchell to win easily, 47-33, in a Class 3A East semifinal over Broadneck (11-13) last night.
Northern will next play the Carver/Wilde Lake winner.
No. 5 Western 73, No. 14 Walbrook 42: Western's Doves had a simple goal yesterday: Secure their second consecutive trip to the Class 4A North region final. The Warriors had the misfortune of being in the way.
With a charring explosion of offense in the second quarter, Western overwhelmed Walbrook to move within one game of its second appearance in the state semifinals in three seasons. Western senior Latia Few led all scorers with 19 points.
Few was at the center of the Doves' decisive 19-2 run that started late in the first quarter and didn't end until Western led 29-11 with 4: 37 left before halftime. The Doves led 43-17 at half.
The Warriors failed to score during the opening four minutes of the third period, and their deficit was 53-17 after a bank shot by the Doves' Drumgold with 4: 25 left.
No. 10 Milford Mill 101, Woodlawn 67: The Millers dominated throughout in this Class 3A North semifinal, building a 17-6 lead after the first 4: 30 and never looking back, using their full-court press to disrupt the Warriors' offense and time and again beating them down court on the break.
Playing with the flu, Clark scored a game-high 28 points -- including 13 in a span of 2: 47 to finish the third quarter. Toney had 22, and center Tiffany Johnson added 19 as the Millers shot 51 percent from the floor.
No. 13 Centennial 37, Mount Hebron 28: In a game full of tenison and horrible shooting, Centennial made 23 of 34 free throws and got key fourth-quarter baskets by senior forward Tia Richardson to advance to the Class 2A South region final game.
The Eagles (23-2) will play Central-Prince George's, a 60-55 winner over Long Reach, tomorrow at Central for the chance to make the state semifinals for the second time in three seasons.
Centennial made seven of 40 field-goal attempts and didn't make a basket in the third quarter. The Eagles did convert eight of eight free throws to take a 23-15 lead into the final period.
Mount Hebron, eliminated in the playoffs for the third straight season by the Eagles, made six of 44 shots and also failed to score a basket in the third quarter.
"Both teams missed easy shots," said Centennial coach Dave Greenberg, whose team beat Mount Hebron twice in the regular season.
No. 14 Dunbar 69, Poly 19: The Poets (20-3) cruised to victory in their Class 2A East semifinal victory over Poly, building a 39-7 halftime lead. Dunbar's Keisha Wills led all scorers with 16 points, and Toni Kennedy had 12.
Towson 55, Lansdowne 48: Towson guard Lindsay Buchanan scored 25 points, which helped the Generals (18-4) overcome a four-point halftime deficit to win their Class 2A North semifinal. Towson has now won four in a row since ending a three-game slide.
Fallston 60, Aberdeen 58: With the score tied at 56 and a minute to play, Ali Vignola hit a two-pointer and two free throws to lift the Cougars (14-8) past the visiting Eagles in a Class 3A North semifinal. Vignola finished with a game-high 23 points.
Central 60, Long Reach 55: Nadiyah Simms had 24 points, helping Central defeat Long Reach. The Lightning's LaToya Hines scored 22. Central made eight key free throws in the last two minutes to seal the Class 2A South victory.
Pikesville 65, Chesapeake-BC 54: Pikesville (12-9) guard Laurie Parson had 39 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and four steals in the Panthers' Class 1A North victory over the Bayhawks.
Hereford 47, Rising Sun 43: Melanie McComas and Gina Allen scored 12 and 11 points, respectively, as the Bulls (19-7) downed Rising Sun in Class 1A North semifinal action.
Pikesville will play for the region title at Hereford at 7 p.m. tomorrow.
Glenelg 84, Hammond 44: Glenelg's Kris Brust had 11 rebounds, enabling her to set a school season record of 333 for the Gladiators (23-1). Brust led all scorers with 25 points.
Glenelg will host the winner of today's Oakland Mill-Brunswick game tomorrow.
