Spring Garden Elementary carnival set for Saturday

THE BALTIMORE SUN

THE GARDEN PARTY, or annual school carnival, happens at Spring Garden Elementary School on Saturday. Children of elementary school age will enjoy skill games and crafts from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m, plus door prizes, cake walk, silent auction and book fair.

The school PTA sponsors the event.

Children can make and take bead necklaces and name bracelets, have faces painted and receive nonpermanent color hair spray.

Crafts made by parents and children of the school will be sold. The annual bake sale will be held. Food concessions include pretzels, lemon sticks, snowballs, pizza, hot dogs and soda.

Musical chairs will be played, with the reward of homemade cakes, in a game called the cake walk.

Staff and teachers at the school will offer a silent auction from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Bids are registered until 1 p.m., with winners announced at 1: 15 p.m.

Auction items include an afternoon for a child with a favorite teacher. Several kindergarten teachers are inviting students to lunch at Pizza Hut. Several third-grade teachers have teamed to offer miniature golf and pizza, each escorting a lucky pupil.

Other teachers have teamed for videos and ice cream, or roller skating and dinner. The auction includes Beanie Babies, mystery books, a shopping trip and a pile of art supplies.

Carnival-style games scaled to youngsters will be played from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Each game costs 25 cents. Free door prizes will be awarded hourly.

Spring Garden Elementary is on Boxwood Drive in Hampstead.

Craft fair scheduled

Anyone who has crafts items of a country theme is encouraged to participate in the annual Country Craft Fair at St. George's Episcopal Church, 2434 Cape Horn Road, Hampstead.

The fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 15, rain or shine.

Every year, a large variety of country-style crafts are featured in outdoor booths on the church parking lot and lawn.

In past years, herbs, garden ornaments, dried and silk floral wreaths, potpourri and hand-decorated clothing were featured.

The event, which benefits the church, includes children's activities, baked goods, free drawing and silent auction. Refreshments are available.

Booth spaces range from $15 to $25, and vendors must provide their display.

Expo attracts 3,000

At least 3,000 people attended the 16th annual Hampstead Business Expo on Saturday at North Carroll High School.

"There were approximately 81 vendors this year, including community service organizations. I felt the expo was very successful and people enjoyed themselves. I was very pleased," said Kathy Rampolla, director of the expo.

People flowed through the school to see business displays and win raffles. They were entertained with an hour of magic by Ronald McDonald. They heard the lively pop music of the North Carroll Ensemble.

Dancers sparked performances on stage, from the studios of Rhythm In Shoes, Falls Road Dance Studio and Always Dancing. Fashion trends were revealed by a fashion show sponsored by Ultimate Image and the Deb Shoppe.

Shiloh pottery gave pottery demonstrations, and children's faces were painted. St. George's Episcopal Church offered children's activities.

"All vendors were pleased with the turnout and the response they got," Rampolla said.

Business group election

Hampstead Business Association will meet at 7 p.m. today in Hampstead Town Hall. Elections of officers and board members will take place, and Hampstead Mayor Christopher M. Nevin will present an update on town issues.

Running uncontested for election are Chris Cavey for president, Russ Vriezen for vice president, LaVere Grimes for recording secretary, James Rupert for treasurer, Angie Cassetta for corresponding secretary, and for members of the board, Kathy Rampolla, Chuck Cassetta and Dorothy Gaspar.

Hampstead Business Association, with about 150 members, offers monthly networking meetings, a newsletter, business directory and large annual community events. Businesses offering services to the Hampstead area are welcome.
