Grant's 5 goals lift Delaware over Gannon; Terps women prevail

All-American John Grant scored five goals and assisted on four others to lead No. 10 Delaware to a season-opening win, 19-8, over Gannon last night in Newark, Del.

The Blue Hens led 7-1 midway through the second quarter and outscored Gannon (1-2) 7-4 in the second half.

Grant scored three times and had two assists in the third period.

Massachusetts 19, Holy Cross 4: John Madigan had three goals and two assists as the Minutemen won their season opener.

Massachusetts scored six consecutive goals over a 17-minute stretch in the first half to lead 10-1 at halftime.

Franklin & Marshall 14, Goucher 5: The Diplomats (1-0) scored the game's first seven goals on the way to a nonconference win over the host Gophers (1-1).

Freshman Phil Anthony led Goucher with four goals.

Women

No. 1 Maryland 12, Penn State 8: Jen Adams led all scorers with four goals as the Terps downed the host Nittany Lions in the season opener for both schools.

Kristin Sommar and Christie Jenkins each added three goals.

Maryland scored five goals in the opening 10 minutes before Penn State rallied with six of the next nine goals and trailed 8-6 at halftime.

Adams scored twice in the second half as Maryland pushed ahead, 11-6.
