John Thornton and Matt Kunkel extended undefeated streaks and South Carroll, with four individual winners, easily captured the team crown in the annual Class 3A-4A, North Region championships yesterday at Fallston High School.
Thornton, a C. Milton Wright senior, improved to 32-0, beating Shane Farmer of Aberdeen in the final, 11-2. Aberdeen senior Kunkel moved to 27-0, taking the title with a 7-3 conquest of South Carroll's Anton Enrique.
South Carroll got championships from Kellen Weber (103), Dan Patterson (112), Bryan Hamper (130) and Mike Muller (152) in leading a 1-2-3 sweep for Carroll County teams with 157 points. North Carroll was second with 102, and Westminster, third, in the 18-team field.
The top four in each weight class qualified for the state championships, scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Western Maryland College.
Patterson (29-2) and Muller (27-4) recorded the only pins of the championship round.
Patterson, a sophomore, stopped Bel Air junior Chris Bland (23-5) in 3 minutes, 3 seconds.
Muller, a senior, thwarted Gary Burkhardt (31-2), a Parkville senior whose only previous loss had been to Derrick Oxendine (by 7-5), a two-time Baltimore County and regional champ from Overlea, at 2: 41.
"He was in a zone. He simply dominated his class," South Carroll coach Pete Olson said of Patterson. He decisioned Adam Tenney of Westminster in the quarterfinals, then pinned J. C. Cropf of Fallston and Bland.
En route to his title, Muller, the No. 3 seed, beat No. 2 John Ishibashi of Aberdeen in the semifinals, 11-6, and Burkhardt, the top seed.
Burkhardt took his opponent down and then got him in a cradle for two near-fall points and a 4-0 lead, before Muller got a reversal at the end of the period, then took charge in the second segment.
"Every year, people put me on my back and I win, and vice-versa," said Muller, who claimed a second straight regional title.
"I thought I was OK when I got past Ishibashi, but then people told me Burkhardt was good and I saw his record, and I thought, 'Uh oh.' "
Olson said: "When Burkhardt had him in a cradle and Muller was working against him, it was beautiful. They were both expending so much energy and there was no motion. He beat two excellent wrestlers."
Of the seven individual championships, Carroll schools won seven; Harford, three; Baltimore County, two; and Howard, one.
Thornton and Kunkel were joined by Jacob Still of C. Milton Wright (119); the Baltimore County victors were Chris Pike (145) of Perry Hall and Leonard Jovenal (160), Catonsville.
Heavyweight Asmar Haglar earned a title for Wilde Lake, outlasting Carter Hugo of C. M. Wright, 14-9.
Still, the Harford County champion, boosted his junior season mark to 30-4, blitzing South Carroll's Buddy Olson, 13-0, in the final.
