St. Mary's makes NCAAs in Div. III, Bowie in Div. II; State women


Erica Pearson scored 27 points and Jen Francis added 17 as St. Mary's advanced to the Division III NCAA tournament with a 75-69 win yesterday over Gallaudet in the final of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament.

Ronda Jo Miller, the top-scorer in Division III, finished with a game-high 35 points and 19 rebounds.

Bowie State 71, Fayetteville State 55: Rashida Brooks scored 20 and grabbed 15 rebounds as the Bulldogs (25-3) won their third straight Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association title at Winston-Salem, N.C.

Bowie State clinched a berth in the 48-team field for the NCAA Division II tournament.

Bowie State led 31-28 at halftime, but a 19-2 spurt over the first 5: 42 of the second half gave the Bulldogs a 51-30 lead.

Pittsburgh-Bradford 69, Frostburg State 63: Despite 30 points and 16 rebounds from Shannon Rexrode (Catonsville) the Bobcats (17-7) fell to the host Panthers in the championship game of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.
