DeeJay Punk-Roc
"Big beat" is the hottest new style in electronic dance music, a punchy, pop-friendly sound popularized by the British mixmaster Fatboy Slim. But big beat isn't an entirely English phenomenon. In fact, Slim's closest competition in Britain is an American, DeeJay Punk-Roc.
Don't be fooled by the name, though. Punk-Roc isn't into punk; his sound draws more from old-school electro (remember '80s synth acts like Mantronix?) and hip-hop-schooled turntable tricks. Expect a lot of both when DeeJay Punk-Roc and Barry Ashworth of the Dub Pistols play Fletcher's tonight.
Tickets are $8, and the doors at Fletcher's, 701 S. Bond St., open at 9 tonight. Call 410-880-8124.
