Purim Carnival

Come celebrate the deliverance of the Persian Jewish community at Howard County's 7th Annual Community Purim Carnival this Sunday. With games, refreshments, prizes, crafts and entertainment, the carnival offers something for the whole family. Young children will have the opportunity to show off their favorite Purim characters in the carnival's annual Parade of Costumes, and older kids will enjoy the Moonbounce and speed-pitch baseball. Headlining the day's entertainment will be Elaine Hercenberg, preforming her songs of Queen Esther, Mordecai and Haman.

Howard County's 7th Annual Community Purim Carnival will be at Long Reach High School, 6101 Old Dobbin Road, Columbia, on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Entry to the carnival is free, but there's a fee for games, crafts and food. Call 410-730-4976.

Hear tales from around the world when storyteller Meliss Bunce presents "Stories for a Small Planet" Sunday at the Waldorf School of Baltimore. Children ages 6 to 10 will enjoy the timeless tales of Juan Bobo and his partying pig, Anansi the Greedy Spider and the clever Monkey Queen. Bunce has traveled throughout the country performing at storytelling festivals, theaters and schools, and she is on the Emmy-Award-winning TV show "Three Stories Tall."

Bunce is adept at telling stories for grown-ups, too. She joins singer/musician Paris Kern and musician Jonathan Jensen on Saturday to present "Love's Sweet Secrets," a collection of hilarious and poignant stories and songs about the odd world of amour.

"Stories for a Small Planet" is 2 p.m.-3 p.m. Sunday at the Waldorf School of Baltimore, 4801 Tamarind Road. Tickets are $8 children, $2 adults, $20 maximum per family, and are available at the school and at the Children's Bookstore, 737 Deepdene Road. Bunce and Kern's adult concert is Saturday at 8 p.m. at the school; tickets are $20, $35 a pair and $160 for a block of 10 and are available at the school; Appalachian Bluegrass Shoppe, 643 Frederick Road; and Baltimore Bluegrass, 5502 Belair Road. For information about both events, call 410-367-6808, Ext. 200.
