Homes, horse farms and history; Away from busyness, it's a community with 'character'


Millersville is an unpretentious, quiet area that may have evolved into a commuter's paradise.

Amid the farms, residents can easily reach such connectors as Interstate 97, Generals Highway, Route 32 and Route 175.

"It's so convenient. It's right between Baltimore and Annapolis and not very far from Washington, D.C. You have the airport nearby and even have the water nearby. It has a little of a lot of things," said Shellie Seyer, manager of the Long and Foster Real Estate Inc. office in Odenton.

"It's a very stable area with a very rural feel," Seyer added. "It keeps you out of the busyness but it's still so convenient. There is so much character in Millersville; diverse is a good word. You have the developments and single-family homes but you also have the rural parts with the horse farms."

While the Millersville area stretches from the Crofton and Crownsville areas to the south and reaches northward to the outskirts of Glen Burnie, the historic Millersville comes to rest around the crossroads of Cecil Avenue and Millersville Road.

"It's still quiet and a little rural down in that area. It's very picturesque. The growth is consistent in Millersville," said Seyer, who has worked in the area for more than 14 years.

Seyer also said the area is unique in that it is made up almost entirely of single-family homes that blend in with area farms.

"It is unique, there's no doubt about it. I like to refer to it as the Central Park of Anne Arundel County," said Don Yeskey, president of the Generals Highway Council of Civic Associations. "We don't want to see any more commercial development in the area. We can go within 10 miles and hit any kind of shopping that we need."

In the last year, the area historically thought of as Millersville had six house sales with an average price of $204,000.

Millersville has its own special past.

Records indicate that in 1839 John Miller of Anne Arundel County purchased 470 acres, parts of Hammonds Inclosure and Abingdon. In 1852, Miller sold a parcel of a little more than 13 acres, to his son George Miller, for whom the town was named. On July 24, 1841, George Miller, then 20, was appointed the first postmaster.

Millersville's was the first post office to be designated along the Annapolis and Elkridge Railroad. Completed in 1840, the A&E; was one of the earliest rail lines in the country, connecting Annapolis with the Washington branch of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.

"The rural character and the closeness to the Severn River makes it special," said Robert Grimm, president of the Indian Landing Community Association. Indian Landing is just east of the historic section of Millersville.

During this time, Millersville rivaled the pre-eminence of the Indian Landing on the Severn River as central Anne Arundel County's transportation center. Equity records for many of the surrounding farms cited the proximity to both the Millersville station on the A&E; railroad and the wharf at Indian Landing.

The store, house and smokehouse are still on Cecil Avenue. The old Millersville post office remained in operation until 1972, when a new one was built on Najoles Drive.

A historical focal point in Millersville is Baldwin Memorial United Methodist Church, which can be found at the area where Millersville Road changes to Indian Landing Road.

The congregation was organized in the late 1770s and the church, a Colonial-style frame building, was built in the early 1800s.

That church was later replaced with a new Colonial- and Greek-style sanctuary that seated about 150 people and was known as the Cross Roads Church.

In the mid-1890s, the Cross Roads Church was replaced with a stone building.

The existing church was moved across Indian Landing Road to be used as a Sunday school and to make way for construction of the stone structure that is used today.

"The area has more or less retained its rural feel. It basically looks the same. It hasn't gotten to the point where it's unsightly or intrusive," said Elizabeth W. Stevens, who grew up in Millersville and has lived there for nearly 60 years.

"It's a very old area and was originally a farming area," she said. "I still think of it as a rural area, it still has that rural feel to it."
