Hickory Plains Farm's Red Star Rose, the lone added-money winner in a field of seven, is the choice to capture the Deputed Testamony Stakes for 3-year-old Maryland-breds. The 13th running of the $75,000 event will be contested over 1 1/8 miles. Trained by Hamilton Smith, Red Star Rose won the Maryland Juvenile Championship after a near miss in the Rollicking Stakes, also for state-breds. In his most recent outing, the son of Proud Truth faced open company in the Miracle Wood and finished a respectable third. Five of the colts entered in this event are still eligible for non-winners-of-two races. Scootch, Foundation and Heinsohn are recent graduates of the maiden ranks. Tipdover, Smart Guy and A Call to Post complete the field.
Mz. Ann and Ragtime Doll lay three-race winning streaks on the line in the Conniver Stakes, a $60,000-added affair for older fillies and mares. The Conniver, which is being staged for the 31st time, has lured a field of 12 and is also limited to Maryland-breds. Ragtime Doll recently crashed the stakes ranks when she won the Singing Beauty at today's distance of seven furlongs. She will be ridden by Steve Hamilton. Mz. Ann will have the services of Edgar Prado, the meet's leading rider. Prado teamed with the filly last November and is unbeaten aboard the daughter of Citidancer. Most of those entered have either won or are stakes-placed in local events the past two years. These include Halo's Security, Maragold Princess, Valay Bullet, Truth and Nobility, Proud Run, Hip Wolf, Two Punch Lil and Crab Imperial.
