Prized cookies offer sweet rewards

Before you chomp down on your next Oreo cookie, take a closer look. You might have a winner. Through mid-March, specially marked cookies -- with words imprinted into the top of the cookie -- tell you if you've won a prize.

OK, so there's only one cookie stamped with "car" for the '99 VW Beetle, but 1,000 carry the word "cash" worth $100 each, and several thousand have "free cookie" for a gratis package of Oreos, a snack that has been around since 1912. Since then, consumers have eaten 362 billion of the cream-filled chocolate cookies.

Dial-a-meal time

Now, you can help senior citizens and get menu ideas at the same time. The Reynolds Kitchens people are offering a free brochure with time-saving recipes, such as Sunshine Barbecue Drumsticks and Shrimp Creole Packets, by calling, toll-free, 800-MEAL HELP. For every call, the company will donate a meal to Meals on Wheels, which provides food to disadvantaged seniors.

Tidbits welcomes food news and notes. Send to Tidbits, Attn.: Suzanne Loudermilk, The Sun, 501 N. Calvert St., Baltimore, Md. 21278; fax to 410-783-2519.

In yesterday's A La Carte section, the toll-free phone number for the Reynolds Kitchens time-saving recipe brochure was incorrect. The correct number for the free brochure benefiting Meals on Wheels is 1-888-MEAL HELP. The Sun regrets the errors.
