Firefighters find man dead in mobile home

A man was found dead early yesterday inside a burning mobile home in Elkton, Cecil County, said a spokesman for the state fire marshal's office.

Deputy Chief Fire Marshal Allen L. Ward tentatively identified the victim as Charles D. Stamper, 70, of the 900 block of Blake Road.

Ward said the body was found in the kitchen of the mobile home shortly after firefighters responded to the fire about 2: 27 a.m. The fire was reported by neighbors, Ward said.

He said the mobile home was destroyed and that portions of it had collapsed by the time 25 firefighters from two area volunteer fire companies brought it under control in about 15 minutes.

Ward said the fire, which caused an estimated $15,000 in damages, was being investigated.
