Baltimore native Henry Louis Mencken was a reporter for the Baltimore Morning Herald and was later on staff for The Baltimore Sun where he remained for most of his life.
He coedited The Smart Set, a highly influential magazine and later helped found The American Mercury.
Mencken was an overall critic of American culture. A compilation of Mencken's reviews and essays is titled "Prejudices."
"The American Language" which has examples of American expressions marked him as the leading authority of U.S. language.
