Mount wins as Gardiner hits 25, 1,500; Coppin scores 56 in 2nd; Hopkins gains 4th in row; State women


Megan Gardiner topped 1,500 career points with a team-high 25 to lift Mount St. Mary's to an 86-67 victory yesterday over Central Connecticut State in Emmitsburg, clinching the top seed in the Northeast Conference tournament for the Mountaineers (18-6, 16-2).

Gardiner passed coach Vanessa Blair (1988-92) for fifth place on the all-time scoring list with 1,501.

Coppin State 79, Bethune-Cookman 68: Liesha Mitchell had 28 points and 17 rebounds as the Eagles (11-11, 9-5) rallied for a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Florida A&M; 61, Morgan State 52: Teresa Jenkins had a game-high 21 points to lead the host Rattlers (13-9, 12-3) past the Bears (8-14, 6-8) in an MEAC game. The difference came at the free-throw line, where Florida A&M; converted 23 of 36 attempts, and Coppin seven of 13.

Howard 71, UMES 69: Despite a game-high 28 points from Kristi Sheldon, the host Fighting Hawks fell to the Bison in an MEAC game. Howard led 37-36 at halftime and held on by making nine of 13 free throws in the second half.

Gettysburg 66, Western Maryland 57: The host Bullets (12-10, 8-5) pulled away for a Centennial Conference win. Kathi Snyder scored a game-high 18 points for Western Maryland (17-6, 11-2).

Johns Hopkins 54, Franklin & Marshall 37: Molly Malloy and Leslie Ritter combined for 25 points as the Blue Jays (18-4, 11-1) won their fourth straight.

St. Mary's 72, Salisbury State 62: The Seahawks (15-7, 8-4) outscored the visiting Sea Gulls 21-9 over the final 9: 44 to claim a Capital Athletic Conference win. Jen Francis of St. Mary's led all scorers with a career-high 24.

Salisbury (15-7, 8-4) was led by Jessica LaTour's 21 points.

Marymount 71, Goucher 61: Rachel Taylor and Tameeka Lyles each had 16 points as the Eagles (14-8, 6-6) downed the host Gophers (5-17, 2-10) in a Capital Athletic Conference game. Zena Huang's 14 points led Goucher.

Washington College 62, Haverford 53: Behind Maggy Kilroy's 20 points the Shorewomen (14-7, 9-5) won a Centennial Conference game. Diane Zeng and Katie Bierzonski each chipped in 15 points for Washington College.

Frostburg State 64, Pittsburgh-Bradford 53: Shannon Rexrode (Catonsville) had game highs of 17 points and 17 rebounds as the host Bobcats (14-6, 7-2 Allegheny Mountain Conference) won their seventh straight.

Bowie State 73, St. Paul's 52: Beverly Winstead had 21 points and Tiffany Moss 18 in the visiting Bulldogs' Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association win.
