The Carroll County Farm Museum will offer traditional arts classes this month and next month.
Participants are to complete a project during class time. Students may bring a bag lunch. Registration and payment in advance are required.
Programs are:
Chisels and punches: Ken Zastrow will teach how to make and harden these tools according to their uses. Class is from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 27 and costs $100.
Chair caning with Carol Shook from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 27 and 28. Cost is $40. Students should bring an old caned chair that needs redoing.
Blacksmithing, taught by Bob Morris. Class is from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. March 2, 9, 16 and 23 and costs $100.
Students must consult with the instructor before the first class. They will design and complete a project of their choice.
Woodcarving: Jim Calder will teach four techniques from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays. Classes are $40 each.
Students will learn how to carve a design in wood and leave the bark intact March 2. On March 9, Ozark Mountain carving will be demonstrated. Students will create a wood wizard March 16. The final class is on March 23.
Rush chair caning: Phil Bankard will teach students how to cane a chair using rush. Bring a chair. Class will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. March 2, 9 and 16 and costs $40.
A seminar on tree care will be given from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. March 9 with Brian Rhoten from Bartlett Tree Co. He will show slides and discuss tree diseases and other problems. The program is free, but registration is required.
Knife making: Al Carnahan will teach the class from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 13. Cost is $100. Students will learn what metals to use and will forge and temper a knife.
Basketmaking with Carolyn Freitag. Class is from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. March 16 or March 23 and costs $25.
Students will make a traditional bread basket on March 16 and a mini bean pot basket with embellishments March 23.
Open hearth cooking with Brenda Barber will be 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. March 23 and cost $35. Participants will learn the methods and recipes used in the Civil War era.
