Prestige Cable to add eight basic channels

The Georgia-based cable television company that serves Carroll County and seven of its municipalities announced Friday that it will soon offer new services to subscribers.

Prestige Cable TV's expanded basic service will include eight new channels by early March. The subscription rate for the service will increase by 50 cents to $21.95 a month, company officials said.

The addition of these channels is part of a rebuilding project that has been in the works for several months. The revamped system uses fiber-optic cables and is designed to be flexible to meet future telecommunications needs, said Mark Krider, Prestige Cable TV manager.

Equipment to receive and process the new channels has been installed at the company's Westminster office. Over the next year, Carroll subscribers will be automatically transferred to the rebuilt system.

The system will also offer premium services such as HBO Plus, HBO Family, Moremax and Showtime2. To receive premium or pay-per-view programming, subscribers will need to obtain new equipment from Prestige.

To help pay for the costs of rebuilding, the equipment charge for a converter box and wireless remote will be $3 per month. The cost for standard installation, reconnection, installation of additional outlets and service calls is not expected to change. The fee for broadcast basic service is also expected to remain unchanged.

All subscribers will receive information regarding these new channels and rate adjustments before any changes take effect, company officials said.
