Chocolates or wine for sweethearts?

What's a guy to do on Valentine's Day? According to the American Boxed Chocolate Manufacturers, women prefer chocolate over wine as a gift. But Cyberpulse, a division of Los-Angeles-based Impulse Research, found that women ages 21 to 39 would like to receive a bottle of wine.

Fetzer Vineyards probably has the right idea. The winery says you should give your valentine both because chocolate tastes better when sipped with red wine.

Chinese New Year

Say goodbye to the Year of the Tiger. Starting Tuesday, it's time to welcome in the Year of the Rabbit.

Celebrate the Chinese New Year by serving an Asian meal, complete with chopsticks, and giving children a few dollars in red-colored envelopes -- a traditional Chinese gesture called "lucky money." At a loss for menu ideas? Call Hormel Foods at 800-523-4635 for a free recipe brochure.

A canned celebration

February is National Canned Food Month and a good time to stock the pantry with staples that make fixing meals a cinch. Try these ideas from the Canned Food Alliance:

* For mashed potatoes, puree drained canned white potatoes with drained canned yams. Mix in butter, salt, pepper and a dash of nutmeg.

* For salsa, mix canned drained black beans with a little canned mango nectar, diced canned mild chilies, diced red onion, chopped cilantro and salt to taste.
