Bethune-Cookman thwarts late rally by UMES, 76-73; Gardiner's 32 points lead Mount women, 92-89


Freddie Cole scored 18 points as Bethune-Cookman held off visiting Maryland-Eastern Shore, 76-73, last night in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game.

The Hawks (8-13, 6-8) trailed 51-37 with 15 minutes to play, but rallied to take a 62-60 lead on Demetric Reese's three-pointer with 3: 32 left.

Bethune-Cookman (9-12, 8-6) tied it on a Johnny McClenton layup before Cole hit a free throw and Tyris Livas sank two more to make it 65-62 with 2: 41 left. UMES got no closer than two the rest of the way.

Reese led UMES with 14 points.

Salisbury State 80, Wesley 67: George Robinson scored 23 points to lead the host Sea Gulls (10-10) to a nonconference win. Salisbury broke from a 54-50 lead with a 22-6 run that extended its margin to 76-56.

Mary Washington 101, Villa Julie 78: Philip Klaus' 23 points led five double-digit scorers as the Eagles rolled over the host Mustangs. Ayinde Edwards led Villa Julie with 20.


Mount St. Mary's 92, Monmouth 89: Megan Gardiner scored a season-high 32 to lead the visiting Mountaineers (17-6, 15-2) to a Northeast Conference win. Mount St. Mary's saw a 15-point lead dwindle to three with 1: 36 left.

UMBC 81, St. Francis, Pa. 70: Sheila Johnson's 18 points led four double-digit scorers as the visiting Retrievers (10-12, 8-8 Northeast) won in overtime to end a six-game losing streak. Monica Logan had 16 rebounds and 16 points, Kathy Doyle 12 points and Jami Lange 11 for UMBC, which scored the first 11 in overtime and led 71-60.

Coppin State 56, North Carolina A&T; 50: The host Eagles (10-11, 8-5) rallied from a nine-point deficit at halftime to defeat the Aggies (6-16, 5-9) in a MEAC game.

Trisha Allen led Coppin with 20 points.

Morgan State 78, South Carolina State 46: The Bears backcourt of Lisa Mickens and Sherie Cornish combined for 38 points as host Morgan easily won a MEAC game. The Bears (8-13, 6-7) took control in the opening half, holding the Bulldogs (7-14, 5-9) to 25 percent shooting on the way to a 32-14 lead at halftime.

St. Mary's 89, Villa Julie 40: The host Saints (13-7) used a 43-13 first-half run on the way to a win over the Mustangs (7-10).
