Scorpions muscle way into playoffs; 34-28 victory over Long Reach gives Oakland Mills No. 4 seed

Oakland Mills needed a win over Long Reach yesterday to earn one of four spots in the Class 1A-2A South Region dual-meet championships scheduled for Wednesday at River Hill.

And first-period pins by Geoff Glaeser at 171 pounds and Rob Scott at 189 broke a 22-22 tie, helping the Scorpions to a 34-28 victory and a No. 4 seed in the playoffs.

The Scorpions (10-4 overall, 7-2 league) will face No. 1 seed River Hill at 5: 30 p.m. Albert Einstein will wrestle Hammond in the other semifinal, at the same time. The championship match is at 7: 30 p.m.

Had Oakland Mills lost to Long Reach, Lackey would have edged out the Scorpions for the fourth spot.

"We knew Long Reach would be tough. We expected a dogfight," Oakland Mills coach Brad Howell said. "David Kay beating Chuck Fries at 152 was the big win for us."

Long Reach coach Bill Flick elected to forfeit to Oakland Mills' Mike Naylor at 145 pounds, and to bump up Fries who had pinned Naylor previously this season.

Said Flick: "It was just one of those decisions a coach has to make. I thought he'd have a better chance of pinning Kay than Naylor."

Kay led the tense bout, 4-3, until he scored a final takedown with 15 seconds left.

"I told Kay to be ready for the possibility of a bump-up. His win really fired guys up," Howell said.

Another key match for Oakland Mills was Paul Nguyen's 5-4 decision over Matt Shevland at 119 pounds. Shevland scored a takedown in the third period. He was penalized a point in the first period for pulling Nguyen's finger.

Dena Glisan of Oakland Mills lost 7-2 to Jeff Carter, but helped her team by avoiding a pin. She hasn't been pinned all season. "My job was to try and pin her," Carter said. "But she's flexible and has a low center of gravity."

The other Scorpions winners included a pin by Jeremy Poe at 140, and a major decision by Brandon MacDonald at 103.

"At the beginning of the season I saw our beating Long Reach as an upset," Howell said. "So I'm proud of my team."

Long Reach (7-7, 5-4) kept it close with a major decision, 10-2, by Jason Orem at 112 pounds. Orem led 5-2 after two periods. It was 2-2 after the first period.

The Lightning won three straight bouts, at 125 with Carter, at 130 with Joe Filipowicz and at 135 with J. C. Porter. Porter, leading 14-2, pinned Brian Clavelle at 5: 03 to run his record to 20-3.

Mike Augustin (160) of Long Reach tied the match at 22 by pinning Adam Lewis in 3: 34.

Oakland Mills wrestled without defending county champion heavyweight Jay Frizzelle, who was disqualified from a bout Tuesday because of unsportsmanlike conduct. His replacement, Brandon Knott, was pinned by Long Reach's Frank Courtney.
