Red Cross to honor Baltimore police for successful blood drive last year

THE BALTIMORE SUN

The American Red Cross was to honor the Baltimore Police Department today for donating 164 pints of blood in honor of two officers who died in the line of duty last year.

The department's blood drive in December honored Officer Harold J. Carey, who died in a traffic accident, and Flight Officer Barry W. Wood, a pilot who was killed in the crash of a police helicopter.

The blood drive exceeded its goal by 13 pints, said Agent Angelique Cook-Hayes, a police spokeswoman. Today's ceremony will be held at police headquarters, 601 E. Fayette St.

Debbie Traver, manager of Red Cross donor recruitment, said, "This was a significant accomplishment because the end of the year is typically a very crucial period for the Red Cross as they make efforts to replenish the blood supply."
