Jan. 30, 1849 -- We learn from the Centreville (Md.) Times that a man named John Hope, a school teacher, at St. Michaels, has been arrested and committed to jail on the charge of having so severely beaten a hired girl, belonging to Mrs. Maria Rogers, as to cause her death.
Feb. 3, 1899 - ELLICOTT CITY, MD., Feb. 2 -- In a speech before the Colored Teachers' Institute, held today in Ellicott City, the Rev. J.H.A. Martin, of the Ellicott City African Methodist Episcopal Church, severely criticized the county school commissioners in their management of the colored schools. The arraignment caused a ripple of excitement.
Jan. 31, 1949 -- Jeanette MacDonald, no longer able to hold her own as a musical comedy star, tries to go straight in "The Sun Comes Up," at the Century Theater with the help of Lassie, the supercanine dog star, and Claude Jarman Jr., the boy who was featured in "The Yearling."
