Registration nears for young Winfield ballplayers


THE WINFIELD Recreation Council is gearing up for the softball season.

Registration for the softball programs will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 6 in the South Carroll High School lobby. The snow date is Feb. 13.

Baseball for age 5 and up: The cost for this program has not been set. A discount will be given for each additional child in the family.

Travel baseball for boys age 7 and older: The cost is $30 and up, depending on age. A discount will be given for each additional child in a family.

In-house softball for girls in kindergarten through sixth grade: The cost is $30 for kindergarten through first grade and $40 for grades two through six. A $5 discount will be given for each additional child in a family.

Slow-pitch travel softball for girls ages 11 to 18: The cost is $40. A $5 discount will be given for each additional child in the family.

Fast-pitch travel softball for girls age 12 and under, age 14 and under, and high school-eligible: The cost is $65. Tryout times will be announced.

Library story programs

The Mount Airy Public Library will sponsor a "Story Pals" story time at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday for children ages 2 and 3 accompanied by an adult. Grown-ups and children are invited to the featured story "Three of a Kind." Registration is required.

"Drop-in Story Time: Bedtime Stories" will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday. Parents and children are invited to join the storyteller just before bedtime to hear entertaining stories. Pajamas, bears and blankets are optional. Registration is not required.

For children ages 4 to 6, the library staff will offer "Drop-in Read with Me" programs at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1: 30 p.m. Wednesday and at 1: 30 p.m. Feb. 5. The story theme will be "Three of a Kind." Registration is not required.

Rabies vaccinations

A rabies vaccination clinic for dogs and cats will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow at Belquest Kennels and Cattery, 18745 Penn Shop Road in Mount Airy.

Dr. Daniel Pare, a veterinarian, will vaccinate pets against rabies. Pet ID tattooing will be available.

Parent classes

Mount Airy Elementary School will sponsor two programs for parents beginning in February.

A "Parenting Solutions" discussion group will be held from 7 p.m. to 8: 30 p.m. Feb. 8 in the Mount Airy Elementary Music Room. Three articles in the program information packet will be discussed: "Loss of a Loved One," "Ten Guidelines for Handling Divorce" and "When Parents Can't Agree on Raising Children."

The articles deal with everything from grief, to discipline, to helping children cope with divorce.

Another class, "Becoming a Love and Logic Parent," will be held from 11: 30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on five consecutive Wednesdays, beginning Feb. 17 at Mount Airy Elementary School. Instructors will be Ann Horner and Karen Sheridan. Registration is required. The cost is $8, to be paid at the first session.
