Big sounds for little ears
The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra will be at its boldest, brassiest best Saturday as conductor Daniel Hege leads a "Brilliant Brass" program for children. Showcasing the musicians of the BSO's brass section, the Classically Kids Series program includes a performance of Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture" with narrator Rheda Becker. The event is designed for families with children ages 7 to 12.

Do the locomotion this weekend at the Maryland State Fairgrounds. With the Great Scale Train Show in town, see the Mason-Dixon Large Scale Railroad Society's garden layout and other detailed train layouts in all scales. Improve your own models with new and rare equipment, model trains and related items offered at more than 600 dealer tables. Sit in on demonstrations and clinics and see rare train movies. Train cartoons and feature films will be shown all day for the kids. The event is presented by the Ellicott City Scale Model Railroad Association.
The train show runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Maryland State Fairgrounds, York Road in Timonium. $6; free for ages under 12. Maximum family charge is $10. Return Sunday free. Call 410-730-1036.
