1997 St. Francis Chardonnay, Sonoma County ($10).
This crisp, medium-bodied, pleasant and dry wine is a soundly made standard California chardonnay with well-integrated oak and hints of lemon and apple. It's not particularly complex but nothing about it is off the mark. Don't be put off by the artificial cork. It actually reduces the chances of getting a spoiled bottle. Serve with salmon, ham or poultry.
