Harris' late free throws lift Mount St. Mary's over FDU; Visitors' 63-62 triumph 3rd in a row; Loyola falls; State


Gregory Harris scored 14 points and made two free throws with 11 seconds to play to lead Mount St. Mary's to a 63-62 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson last night in a Northeast Conference game in Hackensack, N.J.

Tony Hayden added 13 points and Melvin Whitaker 12 as Mount St. Mary's (9-10, 7-6) won its third straight game and handed Fairleigh Dickinson (7-11, 4-7) its fifth straight loss.

Trailing 61-60 in the closing seconds, Fairleigh Dickinson had the ball, but Mount junior Robert Balgac tipped a pass into the hands of Harris, who was fouled and sealed the win with his free throws.

Niagara 94, Loyola 86: Alvin Young scored 26 to lift the host Purple Eagles (12-7, 9-1) to their fifth straight win and stay atop the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference standings.

Jason Rowe led Loyola (6-11, 1-9) with 26 points.

UMES 67, North Carolina A&T; 54: Kevin Wallace scored a game-high 23 and the Fighting Hawks never trailed on the way to their second Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win. Demetric Reese added 20 points for UMES.

Goucher 83, Salisbury State 72: Vince Williams scored 21 and Bakari Ward 20 to lead Goucher over host Salisbury State in a Capital Athletic Conference game.

Goucher (13-3, 5-1) won its third straight game; the Sea Gulls (7-8, 3-3) dropped their third in a row.

Washington College 71, Swarthmore 56: Greg Adams led all scorers with 22 points as the host Shoremen (9-7, 3-3) won a Centennial Conference game.


Mount St. Mary's 87, Monmouth 71: Junior Vera Feldbusch posted career highs of 26 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists as the host Mountaineers (13-5, 11-1 NEC) won after trailing at halftime for the first time this season.

Coppin State 64, Norfolk State 53: Trisha Allen scored 24 to lead the host Eagles (8-10, 6-4) to a MEAC win.

Coppin trailed 42-38 early in the second half before going on a 13-2 run. Liesha Mitchell (21 points) had six points and two assists during the spurt.

Hampton 50, Morgan State 40: Joy Roberson had 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds as the Pirates (9-6, 7-1) downed the host Bears (5-11, 4-6) in a MEAC game. Shakira Smith led Morgan with 12 points.

North Carolina A&T; 73, UMES 62: Fatima Battle's 20 points led the Aggies to a MEAC win over the host Fighting Hawks. Kristi Sheldon paced UMES with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
