Nation at a glance

By the numbers

3 -- Jerseys that Rutgers forward Rob Hodgson wore during his team's 74-71 victory over No. 20 Syracuse on Monday night. The changes occurred after a cut opened over Hodgson's right eye and continued to bleed throughout the game.

5 -- Overtime games played between Pac-10 teams this season, including a triple-overtime game between Washington State and Oregon.

12 -- Years since Auburn entered a game against Kentucky with a higher national ranking than the Wildcats. It didn't help. The No. 6 Tigers lost to No. 7 Kentucky, 72-62, at Rupp Arena on Wednesday night.

1-14 -- The record of the Western Athletic Conference against Top 25-ranked opponents. The lone victory came Saturday after 14 straight defeats when New Mexico surprised Arizona in Albuquerque.

33 -- Consecutive home games won by the Old Dominion women's team before Tuesday night's 77-61 loss to Tennessee. The Lady Vols also ended long winning streaks at Louisiana Tech (52) and Connecticut (54) this season.

39 -- Years since the Miami basketball team has been ranked nationally. The Hurricanes slipped in this week at No. 25.

398 -- Consecutive games in which Vanderbilt has made a three-point shot. The Commodores have made at least one in every game since the three-pointer was introduced for the 1986-87 season.

Teams on the way up

Tennessee: With more consistent backcourt play, the Volunteers are starting to live up to preseason hype. They have won their past four and seven of their past eight to raise their record to 12-4, 4-1 in the Southeastern Conference.

Rice: Despite losing their top two scorers from last year, the Owls have doubled their win total from last year and will take a 12-4 record into tomorrow's game against Tulsa.

Teams on the way down

Clemson: If the Tigers are looking for a low point under first-year coach Larry Shyatt, they don't have to search very hard. A 65-58 loss Sunday at Virginia was the second in what is now a four-game Atlantic Coast Conference losing streak for Clemson, now loser in six of its past seven.

Purdue: After a 12-1 start, the Boilermakers have lost their past two -- including a 72-43 demolition at Ohio State -- and three of their past four. Senior guard Jaraan Cornell has had a tough time replacing Chad Austin as the team's biggest outside weapon, and Gene Keady hasn't found anyone inside to take over for Brad Miller.
