Man wounded after shooting at six people, including officers, police say

A man who fired several shots at a group of people, including three off-duty Baltimore police officers, was arrested early yesterday after one of the officers shot him.

Sgt. Scott Rowe, a police spokesman, said the officers, all in civilian clothes, were talking with three male friends in the 4700 block of York Road about 3 a.m. when a man with a handgun, who was standing across the street near East Cold Spring Lane, fired several shots at them.

Although no one was wounded, Rowe said the man "definitely aimed at the officers."

Rowe said Officer Robert Brooks, 29, of the Northern District, returned fire, hitting the man once in the right leg.

He said the man was arrested after he was treated at Good Samaritan Hospital.

A .45-caliber semiautomatic pistol was recovered at the scene, Rowe said.

Rowe said a motive for the shooting remains under investigation.

Rowe said Walter Ferguson, 25, of the 1700 block of Hillenwood Road was charged with six counts each of attempted murder, aggravated assault and using a handgun in the commission of a felony. He said Ferguson was being held at Central Booking and Intake Center, pending a bail hearing tomorrow.
