Gunman flees; police charge 3 with robbery

Howard County police arrested and charged three teen-agers in the attempted robbery of a 55-year-old woman on the parking lot of an Ellicott City supermarket yesterday morning.

About 12:10 a.m., the Ellicott City woman was leaving the Safeway in the Enchanted Forest Shopping Center when she was approached by a man holding a handgun and demanding money, police said.

When the woman backed away, the man fled into a waiting Dodge Aries and drove off with two accomplices, police said.

Pfc. Rob Dellerba spotted the Dodge on Route 99 near Sand Hill Road and followed the car onto Route 32, where he and other officers stopped it.

Charged with robbery in the incident, police said, are Daniel R. Mahon, 19, of Marriottsville; Bridget M. Smith, 18, of Reisterstown; and Sean M. Cook, 19, of Eldersburg.
