J. C. Penney Co. plans to convert its department store in Security Square Mall into an even larger outlet center, making it the fifth Penney's in the nation to undergo such a transformation.
The department store will close Feb. 1, then reopen about six weeks later as J. C. Penney Outlet Center, said Deirdre Moore, the mall's general manager.
At 150,000 square feet, and on two levels instead of the current single level, the outlet center will be double the department store's size and employ another 120 workers.
The center will focus on home merchandise and women's, men's and children's apparel at discounts of 20 percent to 60 percent.
"It offers us a unique competitive position in the market," Moore said. "It offers a one-of-a-kind shopping destination. The more we can offer our customers in terms of value and selection, the better."
Penney, which has had success in an outlet at its former department store location in Landover Mall, most likely chose the Security store because of competition from its Owings Mills Mall store, remodeled more than a year ago, retail experts said.
