Learning center is enrolling adults for three course
South Baltimore Learning Center is enrolling adults for classes in adult basic education, General Educational Development and pre-GED instruction, which will begin Jan. 20.
Day and evening classes are planned at three sites -- the center at 28 E. Ostend St., the Brooklyn branch library at 300 E. Patapsco Ave., and St. Jerome Roman Catholic Church at 915 Sterrett St. in the Washington Village/Pigtown neighborhood. One-on-one tutoring also is available for adult beginning readers.
The learning center is a private, nonprofit adult literacy organization dedicated to basic education and improving job skills. Classes and tutoring are free, except for GED classes, which cost $30. To make a testing appointment, or to volunteer as a tutor or classroom assistant, call 410-625-4215.

Library branch to celebrate Pooh Day on Saturday
PARKVILLE -- The Parkville-Carney branch of the Baltimore County Public Library system will celebrate its fifth annual "Pooh Day" from 10: 30 a.m. to 1: 30 p.m. Saturday.
The event for children ages 2 to 6 will include games, stories and a visit by Winnie the Pooh. The library is at 9509 Harford Road.
Other children's programs this week include winter-related stories and activities for ages 2 to 6, at 10: 30 a.m. and 1: 30 p.m. Wednesday at the Cockeysville Library, 9833 Greenside Drive; and "Dog-Gone" stories at 10: 30 a.m. Wednesday at the Reisterstown Library, 21 Cockeys Mill Road. Children ages 2 to 6 are encouraged to bring a stuffed-dog toy.
4 public hearings scheduled on education of the disabled
BALTIMORE -- The state Department of Education has scheduled four public hearings this month on changes to bring the state in line with federal regulations on public education and administration of services for students with disabilities.
The hearings -- all at 6: 30 p.m. -- will be held Tuesday at Hagerstown Junior College, Career Programs Building, Room 209; Thursday at Talbot County Library in Easton; Jan. 19 at Greenbelt Library; and Jan. 20 at Towson Library. Meetings will be canceled if schools in that jurisdiction are closed because of inclement weather.
Individuals wishing to comment on the largely technical changes must register by 4 p.m. the day of the hearing. To register as a speaker or for information, call 410-767-0244.
