Navy women escape with overtime win; Loyola women win, are 5-1 under new coach Anderson


The Navy women's basketball team survived a scare in regulation to beat Bucknell in overtime, 65-58, in the Patriot League opener for both teams yesterday.

With the game tied at 52, the Bison (5-8) had a chance to win when Kim Delfs was fouled with one second remaining, but she missed her free throw.

Navy (8-5) took charge early in overtime, forcing turnovers and capitalizing on the foul shooting of freshman Hillary Goodrich, who scored a game-high 19 points. Junior forward Erica Hayes added 16 points and seven rebounds.

Loyola 59, Rider 45: The host Greyhounds (9-2, 2-1) used a 12-3 run late in the second half to earn a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win over the Broncs (3-8, 0-3). Jen Bongard had a game-high 15 points for Loyola, which is 5-1 since Cindy Anderson took over as coach.

Western Maryland 65, Lebanon Valley 58: Senior forward Kathi Snyder had 19 points and 14 rebounds as the visiting Green Terror (7-1) equaled the best eight-game start in school history with a win over the Flying Dutchmen.


Marymount 71, Villa Julie 64: Tremane Howard had 19 points to lead the Saints over the host Mustangs. Jermaine Smith led Villa Julie with 17 points.

Catholic 99, Western Maryland 55: Sean Tuohey's 19 points led five double-digit scorers as the host Cardinals (7-2) downed the Green Terror (3-9).

Mary Washington 99, Washington College 94, OT: George Bunch scored 21 to lead five players in double figures and grabbed 10 rebounds as the host Eagles (6-1) defeated the Shoremen (5-5), who got a game-high 27 points from Steve DeVore.
