River Hill's team strength is the counter move. The unbeaten Hawks clearly showed that during a 42-22 victory over Oakland Mills yesterday.
It was a match highlighted by three late pins, a last-second comeback decided by a misplaced point and the upset of the Howard County heavyweight champ.
River Hill advanced to 7-0-1 overall and 5-0 in the league. Oakland Mills fell to 4-1 and 3-1.
The match's pivotal bout came at 152 pounds.
Oakland Mills' Jeremy Poe (110 pounds) and Mike Naylor (145 pounds) had scored back-to-back pins, Naylor's with 12 seconds left, rallying the Scorpions from a 21-4 deficit to within five points.
David Kay of Oakland Mills appeared to have his 152-pound bout under control against Scott Buescher. The scoreboard said he led 7-2 with 40 seconds left. But he tried for one more move, and Buescher countered, scoring big by using a double underhook.
The match appeared to end at 7-7 after Buescher's pin failed to beat the buzzer by one second. The wrestlers prepared for overtime. But Buescher was awarded an 8-7 win after a careful check of the score book revealed a point missing from the scoreboard.
"Buescher is tough and we're not going to stall out for wins," Oakland Mills coach Brad Howell said. "My philosophy is to attack, attack, attack."
Buescher said he made his winning move as a last resort, feeling the pressure of a must-win situation. "I couldn't take him down in the first period, so I decided to let him shoot. I had pinned him last year and didn't expect him to be that good."
David Borys of River Hill followed with another crucial win over Josh Smith at 160, made much larger when he was able to score a pin with 10 seconds left in the bout.
Jason Fawcett of River Hill put the match out of reach by pinning Geoff Glaeser at 171 pounds.
River Hill sophomore Scott Cannon had the upset of the night, pinning defending county and region champ and state runner-up Jason Frizzelle in 3: 13. "Everyone told me I could win, but I'm really excited," Cannon said.
River Hill had five pins, including one by 135-pound Derek Dauberman over James Ngare with one second left. River Hill was missing 103-pounder Dan Allen, who was 7-0 in dual meets, and 189-pounder Justin Curtis, both of whom failed to make weight.
